Radix
I liked you more
When you just walked on your feet
I liked you more
When it was me you didn’t try and eat
Back when you didn’t rest in the ground
Back when your lips actually made sounds
Your fingers grew long & turned gray matte
Hair became wispy, moldy and flat
Mixed with the soft soil
We found old teeth in our vegetable garden
Next our shed, old pieces of skin, now gray & hardened
I put those pieces together
And they did create a face
The skin was tough as leather
It had a chin scar, like you, in the same place
I knocked on your front door to show you, but the house was empty
Cops came by and said you were all missing
Your mom, your dad and even the shitty cat that’s always hissing
That was weeks ago
And now things get stranger by the hour
I’m having trouble sleeping
Awake contemplating that spring evening.
Laughing, joking, walking and talking
I had your attention for nearly an hour
Until you spotted a fleshy flower
It grew from the ground on a stem like bone
In a place that was quiet
Where not even the sun shown
I didn’t like its thin blue veins
Fleshy leaves
Or bloom that looked like exposed brains
I wanted to go
But you wanted to stay
To try and pull up this odd flower
For the rest of our day
You tugged and pulled
And huffed and howled
But threw in the towel after nearly an hour
With your defeat
You still wanted a prize
So you pulled of a petal
Then mentioned tasting metal
That was weeks ago
Cops came back by and think I’m crazy
Told them I saw your face in the ground
Looking up at me, lips motionless but still making sound
I told them all that you said
Whispering thru my window
Straight to my head
But what I did next, I left that part out
To see if it was you, I came outside
Stepped off my porch & into the yard
You grabbed my leg & almost pulled me under
I yelled & screamed
Awoke my father & mother
Right before I fought and pulled away
Your teeth sinched down and bit thru my shoes rubber
I thought it best to tell the cops a lie
Now our whole neighborhood is on lockdown
And I’m not sure why
A single long black helicopter has appeared
Sitting there, hovering, floating in the sky.
No noise, no lights
Not a window in sight
A flying metal fortress
Above my house day and night
